GRI 3-3
According to the results of the materiality analysis disclosed in section “Materiality analysis”, energy consumption and energy efficiency have been recognized as one of the material topics of Kazakhtelecom JSC. Upon the determination of materiality, the Company took into account the expectations of stakeholders, the results of questioning, internal expertise, and also the impact of the topic on operational costs, the resilience of digital infrastructure, greenhouse gas emissions, the climate agenda and long-term value creation.
For Kazakhtelecom JSC, this topic is of material significance with account for the development of communications networks, data centres, base stations, AI infrastructure and the growth of the need for computing capacities. The effective management of energy consumption makes it possible for the Company to control operational costs, to reduce the ecological footprint, to enhance the energy efficiency of infrastructure and to support the sustainability of the business model in conditions of the growth of the digital load. The Company has set goals on the accelerated development of digital infrastructure and the build-up of computing capacities, including large-scale projects on the development of data centres with a total capacity of up to 200 MW in the medium term. Under such a scenario, energy costs become one of the key factors determining both the financial and the environmental results of the company.
The reduction of energy consumption and the enhancement of energy efficiency not only help to optimise costs, but also contribute to the reduction of the company’s ecological footprint. Kazakhtelecom JSC applies a systemic approach to the management of energy consumption, aimed at the reduction of energy costs and the minimisation of impact on the environment. The Company is certified to the international standard ISO 50001:2018, confirming the presence of an effective energy management system.
At the Company, a Policy in the area of energy management has been approved and is being implemented, in accordance with which monitoring of energy consumption, analysis of energy efficiency and the introduction of energy-saving solutions are carried out. The Documented procedure “Identification of types of energy. Determination of baselines. Energy analysis” has been introduced, ensuring the keeping of an energy register, control of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of equipment, and also the determination of baseline levels of consumption.
At production facilities, measures on the Optimization of energy consumption have been introduced, including the installation of LED luminaires, automatic lighting sensors, the reduction of energy-intensive office equipment, the use of emergency power sources with account for energy-saving modes.
Principles of the “Policy of Kazakhtelecom JSC in the area of energy management”
Striving for the achievement of the level of the best available technologies in the area of production energy efficiency.
Rational use of fuel and energy resources.
Openness and accessibility of information on the energy efficiency of the Company.
The principles and provisions of the Policy are applied to the following spheres: provision of telecommunications services, management of procurement of goods, works and services, current operation of telecommunications networks and infrastructure.
Key directions of the Policy:
- Systemic and targeted enhancement of the professional level of the Company’s employees, as well as the knowledge of personnel in the area of energy saving and energy efficiency of production.
- Response to changes in legislative requirements, national and international standards in the area of energy saving and the enhancement of energy efficiency and improvement of internal regulatory documents.
- Ensuring the consideration of energy efficiency as one of the criteria in procurements where possible.
- Ensuring the selection of the most energy-efficient solutions upon the modernization of basic technological and energy equipment.
- Ensuring continuous monitoring of consumption and generation of fuel and energy resources in main and auxiliary production processes.
